What a Discovery Sprint leaves you with.
One page. This one is for a product we made up, so you can see the format without anyone's confidential details in it. A real brief looks exactly like this, with your product in it.
Rota
A shared chores app for people who split a flat.
- 01The problem, in their words
"We've tried a group chat and a whiteboard. The whiteboard works until someone's away for a week, then it all falls apart and nobody wants to be the one who nags."
Chores in shared flats fail socially, not logistically. The tools exist; the awkwardness of enforcing them doesn't go away.
- 02Who it's for
Primary: people in their twenties sharing a flat with two to four others, who already split bills with an app.
Not for: families, co-living operators, landlords. If they show up, fine, but we don't design for them in v1.
- 03What success looks like
Of flats that add a second member, 60% complete a full rotation (every member finishes at least one task) within 14 days.
Measured from day one with a single event. If this number is low, nothing else matters.
- 04First scope
In: create a flat, invite by link, recurring tasks with automatic rotation, mark done with a photo, one gentle nudge per task.
Out: bills and payments (we link to the app they already use), chat, rewards and gamification, home-screen widgets.
- 05Open questions
Should the nudge come from the app or appear to come from a flatmate?
Where is the push-notification fatigue threshold for a household app?
Do people want a history, or does history start fights?
How we'll find out: a clickable prototype with five flats during Shape.
- 06Risks
Group-chat inertia: the chat is bad, but it's already there.
"Nagging app" perception if the tone is wrong.
One flatmate never installs it, and the rotation breaks.
- 07Next step
Shape, two weeks: flows for create, invite and rotation; a clickable prototype; five flat interviews. Then we rewrite this page as v3.
The brief is the first thing we write and the last thing we stop editing. Read why every project starts with one, or see where it sits in the full process.
